Use Your Car Alarm as a Break-In Panic Button

Burglers don't want to attract attention! This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.

Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have, and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds all the  neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent a sexual abuse crime. Gloria Albritton

July 2010

We had a meeting with Officer Eric Rooks, our COPS liaison officer, this week at the Royal Oaks clubhouse. The good news is that we have few problems here in our neighborhood right now and an active COPS program with fantastic block captains is one of the reasons for that! To keep track of crime in our area, Eric suggested that we log on to www.crimemapping.com. Click on GA, then the Gwinnett County link. You can put in your address and select a radius to narrow down the search. It's a great tool to see what's going on in our area of the county.

Now for the bad news. According to our neighbors, our board of directors, and comments on the Royal Oaks blog, we have a BIG PROBLEM with speeding in our neighborhood. Another serious safety issue is the constant running of the stop sign at Overbend Trail and Oakwood Hills. We have had too many close calls recently and it's amazing no one has been seriously hurt.

So, please BE AWARE: Gwinnett County Officers WILL BE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD with laser speed detectors in the near future. Consider this email your warning, because TICKETS WILL BE ISSUED. We are very serious about the safety of all of our neighbors.

As always, please contact your block captain if you need to report an incident in Royal Oaks. We are only as good as the information we receive and share with each other. Thanks for your help.

Self-Defense: Wasp Spray! (submitted by Becky Day)

I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. You could also keep it in your car and it's perfectly legal. Thought this was interesting and might be of use... Watch a video about it here:

May 2009:

If you have a street light near your home that’s not working, just check the label on the light pole – there is a toll free number to call Georgia Power as well as a light number.

Give the rep at Georgia Power your name and address as well as the light number from the pole. They should be out in about 3-5 business days to make repairs or replace bulbs. If you have a street light on your property, please keep trees and shrubs pruned away from the light so that we can get the maximum benefit from the light. Thanks!

Current H1N1 (swine) flu: Hopefully, you are prepared with some food stockpiled and an assortment of medicines such as NyQuill, just in case. Main causes of worry with this flu are the combining of several different strains of flu into this one that they are calling swine flu. It contains flu genes from 2 different types of swine, as well as bird (avian) flu genes and human flu. And the fact that this flu is spreading human-to-human makes it dangerous.

Here are two websites to watch:
http://www.pandemicflu.gov/ and http://www.who.int/en/

I found this site very interesting -

Jan 2009:

We have new volunteer Captain for Section 2: Jill Mulligan, 22 Oakwood Hills Drive. Jill was incorrectly identified as Captain for Section 1. The correct Captains for Section 1 are Guy and Becky Whitehead. We apologize for the error.

McGruff the Crime DogThe police should ALWAYS be called if you think there is a problem in the neighborhood, and then you should let a block captain know what is going on so we can spread the word. Our liaison officer for Gwinnett County assures us that they are always available to look into problems for us.

The non-emergency number is 770-513-5100, but they don't mind if you call 911 to request a patrol car, according to our liaison officer.
